Gifted & Talented

Greetings! You have arrived at Excel Academy’s GT (Gifted and Talented) page. Here you will find all sorts of resources. Please look around and see what’s happening in Excel's GT community!

Jeffco’s Online GT Academy will provide a range of options for gifted students to be able to equitably access enriched/accelerated content with a cohort of like-minded learners. These courses will be taught by GT-endorsed and trained teachers and are only available for identified GT students who are seeking accelerated courses but may not be able to access them due to scheduling issues, transportation concerns, or other barriers.

We will offer classes in the following subjects in 2018-19:

  • Seventh-grade GT ELA
  • Seventh/eighth-grade GT Math (Pre-Algebra)
  • Seventh-grade GT Social Studies Seventh-grade ‘GT’ Science

Courses will be open to all qualified and approved Jeffco students currently on an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP). Students will need to have an eligibility form completed and approved by their home school’s counselor or administrator. No students will be enrolled without the knowledge and approval of their home school.

Affective Goals

This year each student is creating an Affective Goal to go along with their Academic, or SMART goals. Affective goals refer to personal growth that students would like to implement in their lives. The options for Affective Goals are limitless. For some students this may be that they want to work on coming to class with a positive attitude every day, completing and handing in assignments on time, adopting a growth mindset, learning to better appreciate others, or to develop positive relationships with others and many many more. Affective goals help us meet the developmental needs of the whole child.

It’s important to address gifted students’ needs so that they can be successful as individuals in the world and here in school. Every GT student has created an Affective Goal this year, ask your child about theirs!

Mrs. Puckett
M.Ed.

Every month I host afternoon groups that explore some of the most common affective needs of gifted students. In small groups we discuss the harder side of being a GT student and come up with positive and healthy ways in dealing with some of these difficulties. Below is the schedule for 2017-18. Every child in grades 2-5 are scheduled to meet with me once a month.
  • September Perfectionism and Impostor Syndrome
  • October Growth Mindset
  • November Procrastination and Motivation
  • December Gifted Girls
  • January Communication
  • February Facing Failure
  • March Conflict
  • April Powerful Emotions
  • May Change

Meet Mrs. Puckett

I am a Colorado native and have lived in Arvada for the past 18 years. My husband and I have two wonderful sons, Mason and Jack. Mason is a drummer and Jack is a junior at Ralston Valley High School. I have a BA in Sociology and a Masters in Education.

I am extremely passionate and dedicated to serving the GT students here at Excel. It was through the experiences with my sons’ education that I found an underserved population of GT students who desperately needed and wanted to spread their wings and take their learning to a higher level. I am so fortunate to be the facilitator of that growth here at Excel. Although I primarily work with GT students I have met so many wonderful students here with a variety of abilities, but all with something important to share with the world.
